WHAT ARE NEUROTOXINS?
Neurotoxins are injectable medications that temporarily block the nerve signals that tell specific facial muscles to contract. Botox and Dysport, the two most widely used neurotoxins, both contain the same active ingredient (botulinum toxin type A) and are FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines in adults. When used early enough, they can also help prevent the formation of deeper expression lines before they develop.
Botox and Dysport are used most commonly to address areas where repeated muscle activity has created visible expression lines. At Hartwater Aesthetics, our master injector Lindsey Burris, RN most frequently treats the following areas:

BOTOX VS. DYSPORT: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Botox and Dysport are both botulinum toxin type A injectables that temporarily relax the muscles responsible for expression lines. They share the same active mechanism, but they are formulated differently and behave differently in the tissue. The right choice depends on your facial anatomy, your treatment area, and your prior injectable history.
Dysport uses smaller protein molecules than Botox, which allows it to diffuse more broadly through the tissue once injected. This makes Dysport often the preferred choice for larger areas like the forehead, where smooth, even relaxation matters more than precise localization. Botox, with its larger molecule and tighter spread, tends to be preferred for smaller, more targeted areas like the area between the eyebrows or around the eyes, where precision matters most. Onset is also slightly different: Dysport tends to show initial effect in 2-3 days, while Botox tends to take 4-7 days for full results.
The two products are dosed differently. As a general rule, 100 units of Botox is roughly equivalent to 300 units of Dysport. This means a "unit" of Dysport is not the same as a "unit" of Botox, and price comparisons should be made on a per-treatment basis, not per-unit. WHICH PILLAR OF AGING DOES BOTOX ADDRESS?

A few important notes on neurotoxin pricing. First, "units" are not interchangeable between products: 100 units of Botox is roughly equivalent to 300 units of Dysport, so always compare total treatment cost rather than per-unit cost. Second, typical dose ranges vary by treatment area. A first-time forehead and glabellar treatment commonly requires 20-40 units of Botox or 60-120 units of Dysport. Heavier muscle groups, such as the masseter for jaw slimming or TMJ relief, may require higher doses. RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE: WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR BOTOX OR DYSPORT TREATMENT
Botox and Dysport have one of the lightest recovery profiles of any aesthetic treatment we offer. Most patients leave their appointment and return to normal activities the same day. There are, however, a small number of specific things to do (and to avoid) in the first 24 hours that meaningfully affect how your result settles, and a clear sense of what to expect over the days that follow makes the entire experience easier. Lindsey will walk through all of this with you before you leave your appointment and will provide written post-treatment instructions; the summary below is also available for reference any time.
The First 24 Hours
The most important window is the first 24 hours after your treatment. During this period, the neurotoxin is still binding to the targeted muscle, and a few simple precautions reduce the risk of the product migrating to muscles you do not want treated.
What to do in the first 24 hours:

Stay upright (no lying flat) for the first 4 hours after your appointment.

Avoid bending forward or putting your head below your heart for 4 hours.

Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying firm pressure to the treated areas for 24 hours. This includes facials, microneedling, chemical peels, and any other facial treatments.

Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Light walking is fine.

Avoid saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga, and prolonged sun or heat exposure for 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, which reduces the risk of bruising.
What you can do right away:

Return to work, errands, and most normal activities immediately.

Apply a cool compress or ice pack gently to reduce swelling or bruising as needed.

Wear light makeup if applied without firm rubbing or massage of the treated area.

Sleep on your back the first night when possible. Side or stomach sleeping is not catastrophic, but back-sleeping minimizes any pressure on freshly treated muscles.
Common and Expected Side Effects
Most patients have very little to report after a neurotoxin treatment. The most common things you may notice in the first few days are mild, self-limited, and not signs that anything is wrong.

Mild bruising at one or more injection sites. Typical resolution is 3 to 7 days. Bruising risk is reduced by avoiding blood-thinning supplements and medications (when medically appropriate) for the week before treatment and by avoiding alcohol in the 24 hours after treatment.

Slight redness, swelling, or small bumps at injection sites that resolve within hours.
-
A mild headache after the appointment, most commonly after a forehead or glabellar treatment. Acetaminophen is typically fine; we recommend avoiding ibuprofen and other NSAIDs in the 24 hours after treatment because they can increase bruising.

A subtle "heavy" or "tight" feeling in the treated area as the muscle begins to relax over the first several days. This is normal and resolves as the neurotoxin reaches its full effect.

Onset Timeline and When You Will See Results
Neurotoxin results are not instant. Botox and Dysport both need several days for the active ingredient to bind to the muscle and produce visible relaxation, and they follow slightly different timelines.

Dysport typically shows initial effect at 2 to 3 days and reaches full effect at 5 to 7 days.

Botox typically shows initial effect at 4 to 7 days and reaches full effect at 10 to 14 days.
The treated area will look unchanged in the first day or two, then progressively softer as the muscle relaxes. Two weeks after treatment is the standard window for assessing the final result. If a small touch-up is needed (most commonly because a particular muscle group needed a little more or because the result is slightly asymmetric), this is the window to bring it up. Touch-ups within the 2 to 4 week window are part of Lindsey's standard approach to getting your result exactly right.
When to Call Us
Most patients have no reason to call us between treatments. However, there are a few specific things worth reaching out about if you notice them.

Eyelid heaviness or eyebrow drooping (called ptosis) is rare but can occur if the neurotoxin migrates to muscles outside the treated area. It is temporary and resolves on its own as the product wears off, but we want to know about it so we can adjust your treatment plan for the next visit.

Visible asymmetry that persists beyond the 2-week settled mark is worth a touch-up appointment and should be addressed at the two-week visit rather than waiting.

Bruising that persists beyond 10 to 14 days is uncommon. Most bruising resolves within a week.

Any sign of infection at an injection site (warmth, expanding redness, drainage) is extremely rare with neurotoxin treatments but should be reported immediately. This has never been a common problem in our practice, but is worth mentioning so you know what to watch for.

Severe or unusual symptoms (significant breathing or swallowing changes, severe muscle weakness beyond the treated area, signs of allergic reaction) are very rare with appropriately dosed neurotoxin in the hands of an experienced injector and warrant immediate medical attention.

Maintaining Your Results
Botox and Dysport results typically last 3 to 4 months, depending on dosage, the treated area, and individual metabolism. Patients who are particularly active or who have a faster metabolism may see results wear off closer to the 3-month mark; less expressive areas and higher doses can extend results closer to 4 months.
The most effective long-term approach is overlapping cadence. We typically schedule your next appointment so that the new dose is received about two weeks before the previous dose has fully worn off. This prevents the treated muscles from regaining their full pre-treatment strength between sessions, which has been shown over time to reduce the dosage required to maintain a given result and to soften the formation of permanent expression lines over the years.
Beyond cadence, the same skincare and sun-protection habits that support every other aesthetic treatment support your neurotoxin results. Botox and Dysport relax the underlying muscles that produce dynamic wrinkles, but they do not address the surface condition of your skin. Botox for TMJ and Teeth Grinding
Botox injections into the masseter muscle can relieve the pain and tension associated with TMJ disorders and chronic teeth grinding (bruxism). The treatment relaxes the overactive jaw muscles that drive the symptoms, and has the additional cosmetic benefit of slimming a square jaw line over time. Botox for Chronic Migraines
Botox is FDA-approved for the prevention of chronic migraines in patients who experience headaches on 15 or more days per month. The treatment protocol involves injections at specific anatomical sites across the head and neck and is most effective when administered by a provider with deep injection experience. Consult with your physician about whether you meet the diagnostic criteria.
Botox for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)
Botox is FDA-approved for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) in patients who have not responded adequately to topical treatments. It can also be used off-label for excessive sweating of the palms, soles, and other areas. Most patients experience significant relief for 4-6 months per treatment.
