Neurotoxins are injectable medications that temporarily block the nerve signals that tell specific facial muscles to contract. Every time you frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows, those muscles fold the skin above them, and over the years those repeated folds become visible lines and wrinkles. Botox and Dysport, the two most widely used neurotoxins, both contain the same active ingredient (botulinum toxin type A). Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, forehead lines, and platysma bands in adults, and Dysport is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. When used early enough, they can also help prevent deeper expression lines and wrinkles from forming.
Botox and Dysport are used most commonly to address areas where repeated muscle activity has created visible expression lines. They work best on dynamic wrinkles, the lines that appear when your face moves, and they also soften early static lines that remain visible at rest. DYSPORT VS BOTOX IN MCKINNEY, TX: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR ME?
Botox and Dysport are both botulinum toxin type A injectables that temporarily relax the muscles responsible for expression lines and wrinkles. They share the same active mechanism, but they are formulated differently and behave differently in the tissue. The right choice depends on your facial anatomy, the lines you want to treat, and your prior injectable history.
Dysport uses smaller protein molecules than Botox, which allows it to diffuse more broadly through the tissue once injected. The two products are dosed differently. As a general rule, 100 units of Botox is roughly equivalent to 300 units of Dysport. A "unit" of Dysport measures a different amount than a "unit" of Botox, so price comparisons are most accurate on a per-treatment basis. When another treatment is the right tool
Botox relaxes muscles. It does not add volume, tighten loose skin, or resurface skin texture. At Hartwater we match the treatment to the problem, and for some concerns a different tool does the job better:

Deep lines that stay visible at rest often need dermal fillers or skin-quality treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, alone or alongside Botox.

Who should wait or avoid Botox
Botox and Dysport are safe for most healthy adults when dosed by an experienced injector. Treatment is postponed or ruled out in the following situations:

Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Neurotoxins have not been established as safe in pregnancy or while nursing. We wait until after both.

Infection or inflammation at the injection site. We treat only after the area has fully healed.
-
Allergy to any botulinum toxin product or its ingredients. Dysport is not used in patients allergic to cow's milk protein.
-
Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or ALS. These raise the risk of side effects and require physician evaluation before any treatment.

A history of difficulty swallowing or breathing.
-
Certain medications, including aminoglycoside antibiotics and muscle relaxants, which can interact with neurotoxins. Blood thinners and some supplements raise the chance of bruising. Bring a complete medication list to your consultation.

A major event less than two weeks away. Botox takes 10 to 14 days to reach full effect and Dysport takes 5 to 7. Schedule treatment at least two weeks ahead of a wedding, photos, or travel.

WHAT TO EXPECT: YOUR BOTOX TREATMENT EXPERIENCE IN MCKINNEY

Before your appointment
For the week before treatment, avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil when it is medically safe to do so, since they increase bruising. Do not stop a prescribed medication without talking to your prescribing physician first. Let us know about all medications you take and any cosmetic treatments you have had, including prior neurotoxin or filler injections.
Consultation and facial assessment
Every first visit starts with a consultation with Lindsey Burris, RN. She reviews your medical history, asks about your goals, and has you frown, squint, and raise your brows so she can map the muscles behind your lines. She then recommends Botox or Dysport, the areas to treat, and a dose, and gives you the total cost before anything is injected. Your plan is reviewed and approved by Scott Bradley Burris, MD.
Your treatment
Lindsey cleanses the treatment areas and, if you are sensitive to needles, applies ice or topical numbing on request. Using a very fine needle, she places a series of small, shallow injections into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe each one as a quick pinch. The injections take only a few minutes, and the full appointment typically runs 15 to 30 minutes. No anesthesia is required.
Right after your appointment
You can return to work and most normal activities right away. Small bumps or redness at the injection sites usually fade within hours. Lindsey will go over your aftercare before you leave and give you written instructions. The most important rule is to stay upright for 4 hours and avoid rubbing the treated areas for 24 hours.
Right after your appointment
Results build over several days. At about two weeks your result has fully settled, which is the right time to assess it. If one area needs a little more product or the result looks slightly uneven, Lindsey can perform a touch-up within the 2 to 4 week window. Before you leave, we will also plan your next visit so your new dose lands about two weeks before the previous one wears off.

A few important notes on neurotoxin pricing. While the price per unit of Dysport is lower than Botox, that does not mean Dysport is less expensive. In fact, they are the same price for the same treatment. 100 units of Botox is roughly equivalent to 300 units of Dysport, so the price per unit of Dysport is simply the price of Botox divided by 3. A treatment that used 50 units of Botox would use 150 units of Dysport to get the same result. But since Dysport units are 1/3 the price, the final cost would be the same for either product.
Second, typical dose ranges vary by treatment area. A first-time treatment of forehead lines and frown lines commonly requires 20-40 units of Botox or 60-120 units of Dysport, and adding crow's feet increases the total unit count. Heavier muscle groups, such as the masseter for jaw slimming or TMJ relief, may require higher doses. RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE: WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR BOTOX OR DYSPORT TREATMENT
Botox and Dysport have one of the lightest recovery profiles of any wrinkle treatment we offer. Most patients leave their appointment and return to normal activities the same day. There are, however, a small number of specific things to do (and to avoid) in the first 24 hours that meaningfully affect how your result settles, and a clear sense of what to expect over the days that follow makes the entire experience easier. Lindsey will walk through all of this with you before you leave your appointment and will provide written post-treatment instructions; the summary below is also available for reference any time.
The First 24 Hours
The most important window is the first 24 hours after your treatment. During this period, the neurotoxin is still binding to the targeted muscle, and a few simple precautions reduce the risk of the product migrating to muscles you do not want treated and help your frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet soften evenly.
What to do in the first 24 hours:

Stay upright (no lying flat) for the first 4 hours after your appointment.
-
Avoid bending forward or putting your head below your heart for 4 hours.
-
Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying firm pressure to the treated areas for 24 hours. This includes facials, microneedling, chemical peels, and any other facial treatments.

Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Light walking is fine.
-
Avoid saunas, hot tubs, hot yoga, and prolonged sun or heat exposure for 24 to 48 hours.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, which reduces the risk of bruising.
What you can do right away:

Return to work, errands, and most normal activities immediately.
-
Apply a cool compress or ice pack gently to reduce swelling or bruising as needed.

Wear light makeup if applied without firm rubbing or massage of the treated area.

Sleep on your back the first night when possible. Side or stomach sleeping is not catastrophic, but back-sleeping minimizes any pressure on freshly treated muscles.
Common and Expected Side Effects
Most patients have very little to report after a neurotoxin treatment for lines and wrinkles. The most common things you may notice in the first few days are mild, self-limited, and not signs that anything is wrong.

Mild bruising at one or more injection sites. Typical resolution is 3 to 7 days. Bruising risk is reduced by avoiding blood-thinning supplements and medications (when medically appropriate) for the week before treatment and by avoiding alcohol in the 24 hours after treatment.

Slight redness, swelling, or small bumps at injection sites that resolve within hours.
-
A mild headache after the appointment, most commonly after a forehead or glabellar treatment. Acetaminophen is typically fine; we recommend avoiding ibuprofen and other NSAIDs in the 24 hours after treatment because they can increase bruising.

A subtle "heavy" or "tight" feeling in the treated area as the muscle begins to relax over the first several days. This is normal and resolves as the neurotoxin reaches its full effect.

Onset Timeline and When You Will See Results
Neurotoxin results build gradually. Botox and Dysport both need several days for the active ingredient to bind to the muscle and produce visible relaxation, and they follow slightly different timelines.

Dysport typically shows initial effect at 2 to 3 days and reaches full effect at 5 to 7 days.

Botox typically shows initial effect at 4 to 7 days and reaches full effect at 10 to 14 days.
Your frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet will look unchanged in the first day or two, then progressively softer as the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles smooth out. Two weeks after treatment is the standard window for assessing the final result. If a small touch-up is needed (most commonly because a particular muscle group needed a little more or because the result is slightly asymmetric), this is the window to bring it up. Touch-ups within the 2 to 4 week window are part of Lindsey's standard approach to getting your result exactly right.
When to Call Us
Most patients have no reason to call us between treatments. However, there are a few specific things worth reaching out about if you notice them.

Eyelid heaviness or eyebrow drooping (called ptosis) is rare but can occur if the neurotoxin migrates to muscles outside the treated area. It is temporary and resolves on its own as the product wears off, but we want to know about it so we can adjust your treatment plan for the next visit.

Visible asymmetry that persists beyond the 2-week settled mark is worth a touch-up appointment and should be addressed at the two-week visit rather than waiting.
-
Bruising that persists beyond 10 to 14 days is uncommon. Most bruising resolves within a week.
-
Any sign of infection at an injection site (warmth, expanding redness, drainage) is extremely rare with neurotoxin treatments but should be reported immediately. This has never been a common problem in our practice, but is worth mentioning so you know what to watch for.

Severe or unusual symptoms (significant breathing or swallowing changes, severe muscle weakness beyond the treated area, signs of allergic reaction) are very rare with appropriately dosed neurotoxin in the hands of an experienced injector and warrant immediate medical attention.

Maintaining Your Results
Botox and Dysport results typically last 3 to 4 months, depending mostly on the dose and the strength of the treated muscles. Strong muscles and conservative doses tend to see lines return closer to the 3-month mark, while less expressive areas and doses matched to the muscle can extend results closer to 4 months. You may hear that intense exercise or a fast metabolism shortens results. Many patients report it, but the evidence is limited. The most effective long-term approach to keeping wrinkles softened is overlapping cadence. We typically schedule your next appointment so that the new dose is received about two weeks before the previous dose has fully worn off. This prevents the muscles behind your frown lines, forehead lines, and crow's feet from regaining their full pre-treatment strength between sessions. Over years, consistent treatment also helps soften lines that had begun to etch in at rest.
